Clouds rise over Walker Lake on Jan. 28, 2004. The remnant of prehistoric Lake Lahontan is 15 miles north of Hawthorne, Nev. and hosts the largest concentration of loons on any inland lake in North America. A festival is held every year for bird-watchers to see the estimated 1,400 loons that use Walker Lake as an important stop on their migrations in the spring and fall. <br />
